The German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) is a development partner funded by the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation. It has a global network of over 130 countries supporting national development projects and Programmes. For more information on GTZ, please go to www.gtz.de/en/
In Kenya, GTZ supports three key areas, namely:
Governance and HIV/AIDS are cross-cutting measures
The Kenyan government uses a multisectoral approach to deal with HIV and AIDS whereby all sectors of development are required to link their activities to support HIV and AIDS interventions. The National AIDS Control Council has put in place systems and structures up to the grassroots (village) levels where there exists Village AIDS Control Committees which support implementation of HIV/AIDS activities at the Village level.
The GTZ Health Sector Programme has supported implementation of Body Mapping – an approach that uses art to help participants express their emotions, successes and challenges of living with HIV. Through Body Mapping, People Living with HIV (PLHs) are able to reflect on their lives (e.g. birthplaces, schooling, family, working, getting infected) and after infection (their future). Body Mapping helps PLHs realize that there is a future with HIV.
After a week’s training of pure artwork, the team of up to 10 participants undergo another training in business skills. This is followed by financial support to initiate Income Generating Activities (IGAs). The idea is to connect Body Mapping to means of livelihood for PLHs. To ensure sustainability, the Body Mapping group has to be a product of an existing and well-grounded organization.
So far, the GTZ Health Sector Programme is working with three groups mainly comprising young people aged up to 35 years based in Nairobi’s poor settings. The three are supported by the following organizations:
All the support to the Body Mapping groups is channeled through the above well-established organization.

The approach promotes the national initiative of Prevention with Positives (PwP).
